Dear Raghda,

I love the photos of your cats. They are wonderful. I have three cats myself.

I am writing a book about Iraq. It is called Iraq: Then And Now. In 2002 I wrote a travel guide to Iraq but cannot update this for obvious reasons.

It would be wonderful if you could send me a short article 500 - 1,000 words about life in Baghdad during Saddam's time and now noting the most obvious changes and what it has meant to your life. Your contribution would of course be acknowledged.

Raghda, Not everybody in the world feels negatively toward you, hardly. It's too easy to write off an entire group of people because of a few. But there are also those who know better than that. [I just wish that the politicians would learn to stop thinking in absolutes (good or bad)...] You are very much a person of the world... and each of us can do something, that is, work toward peace. It's through getting to know the 'other' that we find out that we are the same and there is no 'other'. After all you and I both need air, water, and food to survive. More important, the colour of our blood is the same. We are sisters in the world. And, on a lighter note, we both love kitties. All the best.

I am sad that you are sad. I am glad that you have a nice family. I don't completely understand everything about how and why the situation in Iraq is as it is. I, too, wish it were different. Just remember: each person can make a difference. You have. One person can change the world. And even if you feel as if no one cares, that shouldn't stop you. You still have a responsibility to yourself and an obligation to be happy, even if you feel as if the rest of the world doesn't care whether you make it or not. Everyone feels like that from time to time, unless they are stupid or take nothing seriously. But please don't let yourself feel that way for too long! Despair doesn't lead anywhere. You are entitled to your sadness, but always remember how great life can be and how much joy there is, too.

Dear Raghda,

I wish I could write something meaningful but I don’t know what to say. I have read your blog for a couple of years and am amazed at how strong you have been through all the terrible things that the political party/president that is currently in charge of my country has put you and your countrymen through. It’s not the will of most people in this country and I, for one, hope it will come to an end soon and that our troops will leave your counrty and that the people in Iraq who are fighting will throw down their weapons and try to live peacefully. Then maybe you can return to your beloved Iraq.

Is that too much to hope for? I hope not.

You, through your blog, have become a citizen of the planet and at a very young age you have made friends who love you and care for you and will remember your blog for years to come. Keep this blog open to call on us when you need support, references or just a little cheering up.

At your age you should be safe in your own room in Baghdad, snuggling with your kitties and giggling about boys, rock stars and movie idols with your friends. It’s not fair.

Enjoy your time with your family in Syria!
