In America, sometimes people will break the window to your car so that they can open the door. Next they look for money, CDs, CD players, or whatever goods you have in your car.
I doubt that soldiers go around breaking people's windows - they would get into trouble.

Baghdad 'Cat'Girl, I am so sorry that this happened to your father. I do not understand what could have happened. But I promise you this, there is something that we may not know about what happened. Could it be possible that some other soldier that did not speak to your father could have driven by and been afraid that there could be something in the car that was harmful? These soldiers do not know how good your father is. I am positive, if they knew him, or even knew his cute daughter, they would have protected your father's car. I bet, if you asked the soldiers, they would have your fathers window fixed. What do you think?
I love your last email,
Until next time,
Sarah

I poped to my mind is this when I read your post.
They might have thought that there might have been a bomb in the car. Anyway, thanks to Allah that he is safe though.

I'll go with what Faisel said. That's what popped up in my mind when I read your post.
I'm glad your dad is ok.

They might have thought it could be a car bomb. Is there an office where he can get compensation?

There was a witnesss who saw Americans break the window. It was vandalism, pure and simple. It should not have happened but that sort of thing happens every day in the US, Canada, etc.. Mostly done by young people who think that it's fun to break something. I hope that your father is able to get paid for the damages.
I love your cat pictures.

Doral,
I doubt it was an act of vandalism as there is little reason for a soldier to break someone's car window for no reason - especially in Iraq where there are so many poor people it would be a cruel thing to do.
The soldiers probably got suspicious when this guy walked up to them and told them his car was broke. They might have thought he was setting a car bomb, so they decided to break in and check it out.
A few days ago I saw a photograph on Yahoo of some soldiers breaking the glass of a little mini-bus in Najaf in order to search it for weapons.
Nevertheless, damage was caused to the gentleman's car. So the proper thing for the soldiers to do (and I wish this was the policy of our govt.) would have been to leave a note telling him how to get compensation. It probably only costs a few tens of US dollars to fix a broken window in Iraq, and such a gesture would go a long way toward reducing tensions between our soldiers and the locals.

As another commenter pointed out, maybe the people that your father talked to left their check point, and forgot to tell the people who replaced them about what your father said.
Or maybe they didn't leave their check point, but simply got nervous about how long the car was there.
Or maybe they were just mean.
Or maybe it was not U.S. soldiers at all, but someone who was planning to steal the car (and found out that it wouldn't run).
One thing I hope you'll understand is that what U.S. soldiers are doing at the checkpoint is potentially very dangerous to them. Like the Iraqi Police, U.S. soldiers are being killed by bombs almost every week. When it comes to the choice between possibly being killed by a car bomb, and breaking a car window to search a car, I'm not surprised that U.S. soldiers might choose to break the window.
However, I do agree that it's not good that the window was broken. Maybe if U.S. soldiers broke the window, your father could get compensation from the U.S. military. He might try talking to the soldiers at the check point about getting compensated. (Unfortunately, I don't think the odds are very good of getting fully reimbursed.)
Best wishes,
Mark

The soldiers might have thought the door handle was booby trapped do set off a bomb if you used the door handle - so they broke the window. I'm very sorry the window was broken, however I don't think the soldiers were just being mean.

Yes, I wish that wouldn't happen... it makes Americans look so bad, and they are not all bad! I hope it wasn't the American soldiers, but if it was, I apologize for them. I think we should not even be in Iraq, because it's not our business... but maybe we did make some good, what do you think?
I really do like your blog, and I enjoy reading it.

Baghdad Girl,
Please keep your chin up, and try to remember that
the majority of Americans and the world is with you
and wants Iraq to be free one day.
Just keep praying and have hope ok? I'm an American
and I want to be able to visit a free Iraq one day.
I donated some money to a website that helps with Iraqi
problems: www.spiritofamerica.net And I hope that others do the same so that we can rebuild your country together!
Don't let the negative overwhelem the positive!
Sincerely,
Brian E.

You guys should leave politics out of here. This is a little girl's blog. All she sees is what's happening in her city and that she liked her life before her country was invaded and bombed. Deal with it that she's not exactly dancing in the street for security reasons.

I was a soldier in VietNam and know that war dehumanizes people. It is unfortunate that the young men who did this have been so afflicted. Pity them for their lost humanity.

Hello - I found your blog, whilst looking
for cat pictures. Like the pics !
I'm sorry that your Dad's car window was vandalised by the Americans. Carrying automatic weapons, and wearing body armour, must make them feel that they are very powerful ... super-beings who are not obliged to behave decently or
humanely !
I'm horrified by some of the comments posted by people who have visted here.
Americans - I think that you should
listen to what this person is saying about her experience of the sitatuation in Iraq. Maybe you should reflect upon what you have read here, instead of lecturing this young woman.
I'm also disgusted by the profane language used by some vistors to this blog.
Baghdad Cat Girl - I wish you you peace, happiness ... and the company of many cats !
